Domestic Violence Safe Shelter for Pets

The Montgomery County SPCA and Catholic Charities Domestic Violence Services of Montgomery County have formed a partnership to assist domestic violence victims and their pets. Assistance will come in the form of a safe shelter for the pet. While a victim is in residence at a domestic violence shelter, the animal can be temporarily housed at an animal shelter, boarding kennel, or foster home. Care for the pet will be provided until the victim of abuse can care for their pet or until they can find a friend or family member to care for their pet.
When coupled with other valuable services from other community agencies — such as counseling, legal assistance, medical care, childcare assistance, and job training — this service helps abused individuals and children escape the violence and start a new life.

We are in need of temporary foster homes to help these families. If you have room in your home to help. Contact

Quick facts:

Animal cruelty is recognized as an indicator of other forms of violence.

Such violence is often used to establish power or control over a partner within a relationship.

Some abused partners are reluctant to leave a violent situation, fearing for their animals’ safety if left behind.

Formal studies have undeniably linked animal abuse with human violence.

Sadly, from 1983 to 1991, the number of domestic violence reports received increased by almost 117%. (NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services, 1983 and 1991)
